Why Isn’t My Business Showing in Local Search? (And How Can Listings Fix It?)

If your business isn’t appearing in Google Maps or the Local Pack, inconsistent listings, incomplete profiles or weak local SEO signals could be the cause. Optimising and standardising your online business listings strengthens trust, improves entity verification and increases your chances of ranking in local search results. In this guide, Australia’s trusted experts at Online Essentials take you through local search listings and what you need to know to boost your business.

Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps?

Online listings are a proven way to increase business visibility across popular platforms, including Google Maps. If your business isn’t showing on Google Maps, it may be because verification is still pending – the process through Google Business Profile can take a couple of days – or if the listing was suspended for violating guidelines. If you have competitors at the same time or insufficient local ranking and authority, you may also need to make changes to optimise your Google Maps listing.

How Do Inconsistent Business Listings Affect Local Rankings?

Business listings online share the key information customers need to find you. If they can’t see your physical location or your contact info is incorrect, then a potential lead will likely go elsewhere. In addition to negative user experience and reduced trustworthiness, inconsistent listings are less likely to appear in the top three local results, also known as the “Map Pack”. It’s also worth noting that Google won’t rank businesses with conflicting listings as high as those with great consistency.

What Is NAP Consistency and Why Does It Matter?

Consistency is key when it comes to business listings online. If there are different names, addresses or phone numbers across different directories, local rankings may go down because Google and other search engines find them unreliable. Such discrepancies are linked to lower local search rankings, reduced visibility in map packs and issues with ranking authority. In that case, customers are driven to competitors with more consistent information. That’s why it’s important to promote a positive user experience through streamlined, well-managed listings.

How Can Business Listings Improve Local SEO Visibility?

Google, Facebook, Apple Maps and Tripadvisor are some of the top business listing platforms, which improve SEO visibility by building trust. These listings are local citations that tell search engines if a business is a legitimate, trusted authority. Active management and responses to listing reviews (i.e. Google Business Profile) further improve rankings, while using relevant keywords and categories helps search engines promote your business better.

How Long Does It Take for Listings to Impact Local Search Results?

Initial improvements in visibility can be seen within a few weeks. Even standard optimisation of your Google Business Profile and adding local citations could put your business in the map pack pretty quick. However, a few months are needed to earn top positions in high-competition industries with business listings online. In many cases, it takes four to six weeks to see a noticeable uptick in trust and authority, which plays a big role in local search results.
